Alfredo Ramirez Pinho lives in Verona, Wisconsin with his partner Marcia and two sons, Sebastian and Giovanni. Alfredo was born and raised in Ybycu’i, which is in Paraguay, South America. He spent the first 21 years of his life in this tiny and very poor community with his immediate and extended family, where the average daily household income was about $10 a day. Growing up, his passion was soccer. The dedication and discipline it took to gain fitness, skill and strength over time planted a seed in him that he believes ultimately helped him achieve and succeed. As much as he loved soccer, he also realized that sports alone were not going to be his path out of poverty. He wanted to live a better life, and he knew that the key to achieving it was education.

In 2010, he had the opportunity to come to the United States and landed in Madison, Wisconsin. He immediately began learning English at Madison College and The Literacy Network on Park Street for international students. In 2013, he passed his English competencies and was able to start taking college courses. That year, he also became a U.S. citizen and enrolled in the surgical technologist program through MATC (where he was able to rekindle his love of soccer by playing on the college soccer team). Following his graduation in 2016, he began working at Davis Deuhr Dean and has been happily employed there for the past 7 years.

He remains passionate about sports and fitness, and he recently completed his 10th Ironman 70.3 on July 15, in Door Country, where he was the overall winner. Since he began competing as an amateur in Ironman triathlons in 2018, his dream has been to qualify for the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. He achieved this goal just four years later and proudly represented both the greater Madison community and his home country of Paraguay during the 2022 World championships in Hawaii!

No great accomplishment comes without cost, time commitment, dedication, discipline and family support to endure workouts day in and day out to prepare for such an event. Along with the personal tradeoffs of time spent apart from family, there are also significant financial costs wrapped up in this sport. Some of these costs include bike equipment, coaching, race registration fees, swim gear, nutrition (both during activity and for recovery), travel and health maintenance.

As an immigrant who came here to chase a dream, Alfredo is incredibly grateful every day to be part of a profession that promotes health and well-being. He really enjoys helping people achieve their goals and bringing people together as a community.
